Supplement & Nutraceutical Merchant Accounts
Card processing for vitamin, sports nutrition, herbal and wellness brands
Supplement merchant accounts for vitamin, nutraceutical and wellness brands
A supplement merchant account lets your brand accept credit and debit cards for vitamins, sports nutrition, protein, herbal and wellness products. Most processors treat supplements as high risk, especially with subscriptions or trial offers, so many brands need a high-risk supplement merchant account rather than a standard one. We are an independent merchant services agent: we review your products, website and billing model, prepare a complete application and match you with underwriting partners that support supplement payment processing. Final approval, pricing and any reserve are set by the processing partner after underwriting.

Why supplement brands need the right processor
Higher-risk classification
Many processors treat supplements as higher risk, especially with subscriptions, trial offers or ingredient and benefit claims. The wrong fit can mean declines, holds or frozen funds.
Subscriptions and trial offers
Auto-ship and continuity programs are reviewed closely. Clear terms, renewal reminders and easy cancellation matter to customers, processors and card networks.
Chargebacks and reserves
Unclear billing, forgotten renewals and slow fulfillment drive disputes. Processors may set reserves or volume limits based on your history and business model.
Supplement credit card processing, set up for how you sell
We match your brand with processors that handle nutraceutical payment processing and help you present your products, website and billing model clearly, so underwriting has fewer questions.
Approval, pricing, reserves and available features depend on processor underwriting for your business.
- Supplement merchant account — a high-risk merchant account with processors that support supplements and nutraceuticals.
- Subscription billing — a payment gateway such as NMI or Authorize.net with stored cards, auto-ship schedules and retry logic for declined renewals.
- Phone and wholesale orders — a virtual terminal for phone orders, plus ACH and eCheck payments for wholesale and B2B accounts.
- Multiple merchant accounts — additional accounts for separate brands or product lines as you grow, where appropriate.
- Chargeback prevention — chargeback management to cut disputes from forgotten subscriptions and unclear descriptors.
What is a supplement merchant account?
A supplement merchant account (also called a nutraceutical merchant account) is a business bank account that lets brands selling vitamins, sports nutrition, herbal and wellness products accept card payments. Funds from card sales settle into it before they are paid out to your business bank account. Because processors review this category closely, the account is underwritten with your products, marketing claims and billing model in mind, not just your sales volume.
When you need a high-risk supplement merchant account
Not every supplement brand is treated the same. These factors usually move an application toward standard or higher-risk underwriting.
- Usually reviewed as lower risk — one-time purchases, clearly labeled everyday products such as vitamins and protein, modest claims, a visible refund policy and a low dispute history.
- Usually reviewed as higher risk — free trials that convert into subscriptions, weight-loss or performance claims, restricted ingredients, new brands without processing history, or high refund and chargeback ratios.
- What you control — the claims on your site, how clearly your offer and renewal terms are shown, and how quickly you answer customers and ship orders.
Chargeback limits supplement brands should know
Card networks monitor merchants with high dispute and fraud levels. Brands that cross these lines can face fines, remediation plans or loss of processing.
- Visa Acquirer Monitoring Program (VAMP) — Visa counts fraud reports plus disputes against settled card-not-present transactions. In the U.S., a merchant is flagged as excessive at a ratio of 1.5% with at least 1,500 fraud and dispute cases in a month (lowered from 2.2% on April 1, 2026). Visa VAMP fact sheet
- Mastercard Excessive Chargeback Program — begins at 100 chargebacks and a 1.5% chargeback-to-transaction ratio in a calendar month, measured against the prior month’s sales. Mastercard program guide (J.P. Morgan)
- Stay well below the limits — processors usually act long before a network program does, so keep dispute rates as low as you can. Our chargeback prevention guide shows where to start.
Running auto-ship and trial offers the right way
Free trials and subscribe-and-save offers are some of the most closely reviewed parts of a supplement application.
- Visa trial and introductory offer rules — since April 18, 2020, Visa requires express consent to the subscription at sign-up, a confirmation with the terms and a cancellation link, a reminder at least seven days before billing when a trial or promotion ends, and an easy way to cancel online. Visa subscription rules
- U.S. auto-renewal laws — the FTC’s “click-to-cancel” rule was vacated by a federal appeals court in July 2025, but the federal Restore Online Shoppers’ Confidence Act (ROSCA) and many state automatic-renewal laws still apply to subscription offers. Summary (Greenberg Traurig)
- Billing that customers recognize — use a clear billing descriptor with your brand name and support contact so renewals aren’t mistaken for fraud.
- Plan your setup — work through our subscription billing risk checklist before you apply.
What underwriters look for on your website
Your website is part of your application. Underwriters compare it with your products, labels and billing terms.
- Supportable claims — the FTC expects health-related claims to be backed by competent and reliable scientific evidence. Avoid disease or cure claims. FTC Health Products Compliance Guidance
- Labels and disclaimers — product labels and supplement facts panels that match your site, with the required FDA disclaimer on any structure/function claims.
- Visible policies — refund, shipping, privacy and terms pages, plus a working phone number, email and business address.
- Clear checkout — the total price, any subscription terms and how to cancel, shown before the customer pays.
How underwriters review your products and policies
Before a processor approves a supplement brand, its underwriting team looks past the application form to the products themselves and the promises your store makes to customers. Having these items ready is the most reliable way to avoid back-and-forth.
The FDA has warned that tainted products sold as dietary supplements are typically promoted for sexual enhancement, weight loss and bodybuilding, so expect closer review if your products are in those categories.
- Product list and labels — every SKU you plan to sell, with label images that match what is on your website.
- Ingredients — underwriters screen ingredients and may restrict or decline products that contain ingredients regulators have flagged.
- Certificates of analysis — third-party lab results for your main products, if you have them.
- Claims — product pages, ads and emails should avoid disease or cure claims; see FTC health products guidance.
- Refund and return policy — clear, easy to find before checkout, with a realistic window and steps to request a refund.
- Shipping and fulfillment — stated delivery times, tracking, and who fulfills orders, since slow delivery drives disputes.
- Subscription terms — price, billing frequency, how to cancel and any trial terms shown at checkout. Our subscription billing risk checklist covers the details.
- Customer service — a working phone number or email on the site, which helps resolve problems before they become chargebacks.

Supplement merchant account questions
Still have a question? Talk to a payment specialist or browse the full merchant account FAQs.
Do you work with new supplement brands with no processing history?
Yes. New U.S. brands can apply. Without processing history, underwriters rely more on your website, products, policies and the owners’ background, and may start you with a lower processing limit or a reserve.
Can I use a supplement merchant account with Shopify or WooCommerce?
Often, yes. Your merchant account connects to your store through a gateway such as NMI or Authorize.net. Shopify limits which third-party gateways you can use, so check the setup steps in our Shopify high-risk merchant account guide.
What is a nutraceutical merchant account?
It is a merchant account set up for brands that sell supplements and nutraceuticals, so they can accept credit and debit cards online. It is underwritten with the category’s products, claims and billing models in mind.
Are supplement merchant accounts considered high risk?
Often, yes. Processors look at your products, claims, subscription terms and chargeback history. Brands with one-time sales, clear labels and low disputes may qualify for standard underwriting.
Can I offer free trials, auto-ship or subscriptions?
Yes, with clear terms. Visa requires express consent, a confirmation, a reminder at least seven days before billing when a trial ends, and easy online cancellation. Transparent offers improve your chances of approval.
What documents do I need to apply?
Usually your business documents, owner ID, bank account details, product list and labels, certificates of analysis, website policies and, if you already process cards, recent statements.
Why might a processor hold a reserve?
A reserve is a portion of sales held to cover potential chargebacks and refunds. It depends on your risk profile and history, and terms vary by processor.
What chargeback ratio is too high for a supplement brand?
Card networks start monitoring around 1.5%. Visa’s VAMP flags U.S. merchants at 1.5% with at least 1,500 fraud and dispute cases a month, and Mastercard’s program starts at 100 chargebacks and 1.5%. Processors usually expect far lower rates.
Do you work with sports nutrition and protein brands?
Yes. Sports nutrition, protein and fitness supplement brands are part of this category, and we help match them with suitable processors.
Can I accept ACH or eCheck payments for wholesale orders?
Yes. Many supplement brands use ACH or eCheck for wholesale, distributor and B2B orders alongside card payments for retail customers online.
